Family Reports

Diane has good days and bad, but overall is doing well. She is living in an apartment and her daughter has come to live with her. Diane went with Debbie Langford to the Ranch and could hardly wait to get there. She began to cry as they passed through the gates because she has good memories there. She knows and loves the Brimhall family.

Norma’s health has not been so good lately. Please stop by and visit or give them a call.

Family History Report – Deborah Langford
Debbie told a story of traveling a well-known road and somehow being lost. She could not remember if she had reached her turnoff or had already passed it. She likened this story to the gospel. We know the way. We know the big picture. We know about what we should be doing. In order to have exaltation we have to be sealed and bound together. The crowning event in life is exaltation through Family History. We know the road, we have been on it a million times, but we often get distracted. We need to stop and recognize, "Wait a minute! Where am I?" The voice tells us when to turn around and where to go.

Even the Lord had a Mission Statement (Moses 1:39.) Even the Church has a mission Statement. It is not merely to Perfect the Saints, Redeem the Dead, and Proclaim the Gospel. These are incomplete. The more complete description is in the RS Manual of several years ago where the cover is of Adam & Eve. President Packer & President Kimball have stated the rest of the completed 3-fold mission of the church. (Please refer to the handout, study it on your own, and pass it along to your families)

Church Members’ personal Responsibilities are all defined in the Church Handbook of instructions. Refer to the handout … Page 5 second frame. Notice the first one. Participate with children in a family organization and attend family reunions. We need to involve our children in Family History. This is directly out of the Church Handbook of Instructions.

Brother Bryson is a Family History Advisor, the originator of FamilySearch.org and Debbie made friends with him while attending a Family History seminar in Utah. They have developed a friendship and he has asked that she keep in touch with him. He assured her that the brethren
are well aware of the B-13 Organization and are interested in our Family History. There is going to be a new emphasis on family history work to help reduce duplication and to become more efficient. More work will be able to be done online in the near future. As you know, there are new ways of doing things in the Family History Department. We have enough people now that there is much to do.

Debbie asked that Board Members look at the Family History Proposal and budget. The old ways of doing Family History are out. The computer is in and the guidelines are the Ensign and the Temple & Family History Work Manual. We are trying to erase the idea that missionary work is only for the living because it is for both living and dead. It takes just as much work to save a dead man as it does a living man. Review the October 1976 Ensign.

I have so many things I want to tell you. I hope we can institute a format in our family reunion where we can have a fireside and a FH workshop so that we can share inspirational experiences and the help we are receiving from the other side.

There is a special quote from President Kimball (in the handout, as well as by Mark E. Petersen and Boyd K. Packer. There are lots of people ready to help and there is much, much work to do. We have people on the other side of the veil that are waiting for us to help them. Debbie bore testimony that she knows the importance of Family History and that we, as a family, need to be doing this work.

MOTION: Gale J

Propose that we strengthen the role of the Family History Committee, Review & Approve a Budget, have Family History Workshops at the Family Reunion, and ensure that Family History is a major focus of B-13 Reunion every year

SECOND: Burdal

Floyd: They have been married for 54 years and had only done temple sealings one time prior to working in the Snowflake Temple. He realizes, now, that it was one of the smartest things we did not do – one of the dumbest things we did do – not to go to the temple more. We need to go there and listen to both the requirements and the promises.

Logan: What I wanted to do is develop Standing Committees and Ad Hoc Committees for the B-13 Organization. Some of these committees will be temporary and some will be permanent. Let’s break Uncle Gale J’s proposal down and make it very specific. We always talk about things like this and then things do not happen. Let’s take Gale J’s proposal and break it down into about four. Look at Item C of the agenda. (Attached) What should the correct title be?

Deborah: According to the Church Handbook of Instructions, the name is "Family History & Temple Work." They are trying to get away from the word Genealogy.

Logan: Okay, then. Let’s make a flow chart of the Family History & Temple Work Committee that will show the committee structure. Deborah is the Chairperson. We need to have a research committee. You may have ad hoc (temporary) committees that will help on specific projects. There might be six specific family lines that you want to research. These temporary committees will do their research, come back, and report on what they have done. The research committee should be a …

Rob: Logan, we’re not that far along. Each family group needs to have someone in charge of their Family History. Those individuals should meet together and find out how to organize the work. There should be a standing committee of 12 members.

Sherie: We’ve made those assignments before but have never followed through so I think we should form the structure first and see what the needs are.

Rob: Once there is consistency, it will work better.

Logan: So there is the Committee Chairman, which is Debbie. Then we need a Vice-Chairman, a Secretary / Treasurer. The committee currently consists of Debbie, Rick, LaPriel, Sherie, and the webmasters. Each of the originals should have a representative. All of the ad hoc committees will be pulled from the committee itself.

MOTION: Logan
I motion that we create a "Family History / Temple Work Committee" with the organization as outlined with these responsibilities.

SECOND: Gale J

VOTE: (All in favor)

Debbie: We need to have a meeting with the representatives…

Gale J: They also need to be given the authority & a budget. They will also need to give an audit report every year to account where the funds were spent.

(Discussion about how the logistics will work. Where do we get names? Is everything funneled through one person? Do we make assignments? Who reports the research to the church?)

Gale J: You cannot make assignments to go the temple. Each family can plan how they want to do it, but temple attendance is voluntary. You can encourage temple attendance but you do not want to make assignments.

Logan: Maybe we should set up the Friday night at the Reunion to go to the Snowflake Temple and do Baptisms for the Dead.

Gale J: We tried this a couple of years ago and most of the people that signed up cancelled at the last minute. We may have spoiled our chances on that idea.

Logan: Instead of committees, let’s call them responsibilities

Debbie: The brethren are still coming out with new information regarding Family History. We should keep that as a responsibility or add it later, but it

Gale J: The temple work will flow naturally from the research. I spoke with a man that used to work w/ Grandpa Brimhall and asked him how long it would take me to do as much as Grandpa Brimhall did in his whole lifetime (with computer, etc.) He said it would only take a few weeks.

Report from Uncle Kirk
Thanks to Gale J and Uncle Jack, Aunt Jayne & I and Jack & Norma, & Gale & Sherie found a place to eat Mexican Food. It was sad to note that Aunt Norma has gone downhill. Sometimes she’s on the ball. Sometimes she doesn’t know where she is. If you have a chance, talk to Jack. If you can’t get to touch him, talk in words. He’s taking wonderful care of our sister. We need to let him know that we recognize and appreciate his efforts. Some of the rest of us are getting to the point where we’re going to need some help. We are grateful for those that accept this responsibility, whether it’s your own children or someone else’s children. We are grateful for those that look out for us when we can’t look out for ourselves. It’s a big responsibility. You’ll certainly be blessed for helping those that are having a rough time. It will come back to you. Don’t shut them off just because they can’t operate as well as they once did. They still have a lot of wonderful things to share with us if we just accept them and not reject them because they’re not running around flying airplanes and other things we used to do. Now we’re lucky to catch a ride with one of our kids. Kris comes to see us all the time. I hope Kris knows how much we appreciate you doing this. It makes your Mother and I’s life much better. Very seldom a week goes by that the four of our kids don’t call us or come and see us. We appreciate Gale J and his lovely wife and what they do. They don’t ask, they just do it.

MOTION: Logan
Write a check out to the chairman and set up the beginning of the year. Set up a separate checking account for the Family History / Temple Work Committee and have them use the funds as needed. Committees will be reviewed on an annual basis.

SECOND: Rob

VOTE: (All in favor)

Logan:
What committees are already set up?

Gale J:
The Ranch Use & Maintenance Committees – but they don’t work very well. I recommend that there is a Finance Committee – leave it the way it is. Taxes, annual dues, Jerry handles the checkbook; Gale J handles annual report & insurance. Hopes that Grant will take it back over when he returns from his mission.

Logan:
Notice Item 2-A on the agenda. We need to have a welfare committee that is the center of the family organization. We need to get away from the idea that the Ranch rules the family... We should have reports at the beginning of the meetings regarding family welfare needs.

MOTION: Logan

Create a welfare committee as outlined, w/ chairman, vice chair, secretary/treasurer. Positions reviewed annually as with the Family History Committee. The Ranch Committee and all that comes with it – falls within the welfare committee.

SECOND: Burdal

VOTE: (All in favor)

Johnnie:
We’re over 700 strong. Why are we not more devoted to this? Why do we not have the insight into this?

Gale J:
No one has felt ownership until now. The originals are backing out and letting the 2nd and 3rd generations step in and take over. When Logan calls Gale and asking how he’s doing on his committee, that’s better than when Gale calls Logan and asks. It shows that we’re handing the responsibilities over like we should be.

Burdal:
This is evolving just like the church did. As a kid, the 12 apostles used to come and visit us but now there are too many members so they can’t. Now the Seventies travel around.

Lorrie:
A lot of people have been just focusing on the ranch but we need to start focusing more on the people than the property.

Gale J:
When the ranch becomes the least of our time, energy, money, etc. then I believe that we will be using it as it was originally intended.

Johnnie:
We need to trust in the Presidency’s dedication.

MOTION: Gale J
Presidency should be given the authority to appoint & change committee members. Let’s let them run the show and make necessary calls and changes the committees over which they preside.

SECOND: Burdal

VOTE: (All in favor)

Lorrie:
We need to let everyone know who to report to.

Logan:
Each of the 12 representatives will be given this information.

Johnnie:

When we are given an assignment, they need to be given with the idea that it is important as a church calling.

Logan:
It is second to taking care of your own individual families.

Janell:
There was never a vote on the Family History / Temple Work Committee budget.

MOTION: Logan
Accept the proposed budget of $3,000 w/ an exception. I have scaled things down with my company and have a computer that may be converted into a server. I will find out how much it will cost to do so. If it is capable, I will donate it.

SECOND: Burdal

VOTE: (All in favor)

Gale J:

Shouldn’t make a committee for Missionary Work (agenda item 2b). We’re too big.

Logan:
We’re short on time … Regarding the water line - We had budgeted $35,000 and we’ve spent $15,000? So we still have money left, right?

Gale J:
No, we’ve spent it all. The tank was $26,000. All of the piping is in, valves, etc. actually put us over budget. Everything has been purchased.

Gale J:
we approved doing a 2" loop, but we didn’t approve 4" pipe down our lane to Kirk’s If we loop it back, we’ll loop it back between Kirk & Tezza’s place & back up through the field.. If we did the whole loop, it would probably be another $10,000. We’re about $10,000 over budget because it cost us more to do the tractor work & valves than we thought. Instead of $75.00 valves, we’re buying $400 valves. Suggest waiting to do the valves until we have the system up and running.

Tezza:
We have a concern. We have a leach line running toward those. Will that interfere?

Gale J:
We’ll have to figure out where they are.

Gale J:
We have $134,000 in the bank. We need to redo how we’re collecting our $60.00.

(Discussion)

Gale J:
Everything is sitting where it was on the By-Laws. We’ve approved the attorney to do more.
The rough drafts are done but a lot of money and time has gone into this. Personal property agreement & By-laws … We need a cheaper attorney. I know what to do and will do it.

Taxes – there is a new tax assessment of everybody’s property. We’re gong to have a huge tax increase because of structures, etc. We’ll know exactly who owes what for taxes because I’ve worked with the county assessor to get it all done right.

On the trust fund – item 8 on the 2nd page of the agenda (5 should be 8.)
Same status as before. $10,000 has been committed for the trust fund. I’ve got to finish getting it set-up with the rest. I’ll have these three ready for the reunion in August.

Kirk:
I’m particularly interested in the role of the Patriarch. It’s never been established as far as I know. Whatever Grandpa Logan said when he was alive – went. I’m now in the role of the patriarch as the accident of birth. As Logan and Mary looked around heaven for someone to be their oldest son and I was looking for a place to go so we made a deal. They needed someone to start their family off and they hired me. I’d like to know what I do. What are my limits? I’d like to know because I want do it right.

Sherie:
You’ve given a balance to the family. You give an overview and focus. You didn’t have a list of responsibilities, by being the patriarch; you give a sense of calmness, unity, and purpose.

Gale J
We operate under a Patriarchal Order but we are a legal Corporation. Now we are to the stage of knowing what the Patriarch does. Rick has been doing a lot of research on the subject.

Presidency (RoyLynn Brimhall, Richard Brimhall, Logan Stapley)
Patriarch (Kirk Brimhall)
Executive Secretary to the Patriarch (Gale J Brimhall)

MOTION: Gale J
Given where we are, assign Rick to continue to work on this, to draft something that we can look at. What is the Patriarchal order in descent? Do we vote on a Patriarch? Does it come by birth?

Logan:
Rick said that in looking at what the Church has done, Alma & Helaman were spiritual leaders. For sure – the Patriarch needs to be the spiritual leader.

Gale J:
My feeling is that the Patriarch should be the spiritual leader of the group. Then there is the corporate structure of the group under the direction of the Presidency and the Board. If the Board of Directors were to make some decisions that move away from Grandpa Logan’s charter, then
the Patriarch would have veto power.

The mission statements are beautiful. Logan has done a lot of research in putting them together and I don’t think that Grandpa Logan could have done it better himself.

Kirk:
We’d better take short steps as we move instead of long strides…

Logan:
Maybe the Patriarch could be the Judicial Branch. He can interpret and guide …

MOTION: Gale J / Logan
As discussed, give Rick the power to keep going on what he’s doing. Ask Rick to have something distributed to the Board by May 31, 2004 (Memorial Day 2004)

SECOND: Johnnie / Floyd

VOTE: (All in favor)

Kirk:
My ideas, historically, the Patriarchal Order, as practiced by the church and most modern governments to a certain extent, is timely but strictly within the rules of the church and state governments. There are certain things that are determined by laws there are certain agreements that need to be put in so that it’s legal. On the other hand, you have to lead kindly. Don’t take a hammer and beat on somebody to change his mind. If you can’t change his mind by talking to him, he probably has a better idea than you anyway. I’d just like to know what you’re

I just want to do it so that I don’t hurt anybody’s feelings so that we stay brothers & sisters instead of splitting up, which scares the hell out of me. When people start arguing it makes me very nervous. With the capable people we have, we should go through this as a matter of fact. I’d like to see whether we’re on the same side of the fence or on different sides of the fence. As I see it, it’s a combination deal and I don’t want to cross over into territory that I’m not responsible for. I don’t’ want to hurt anybody’s feelings. I’ll sit & talk all night long before I’ll specifically try to hurt somebody. I’ve gotta be awful mad before I’ll do it. If I need to be more harsh because we’re not getting things done fast enough – or too fast and I have some way to control it, then I need some sort of indication that you, as members of the family, want me to do something. Each one of you has a vote. I need to know that you accept me as the Patriarch and hand me something that says what I need to do, and if I can do it without hurting somebody then I’ll do it. or hurt the organization in the least than I’m not gonna go for it. If it doesn’t make a majority of the family happy, then I feel that I’m not doing my job and am opening up for a lot of conflict within the family membership.

Gale J:
Do you know what you’re defining? A benevolent dictator! That’s what a good Patriarch is!

Logan:
The best kind of leadership is a King. The reason we don’t have one is that they can’t find a proper successor. We need to have a righteous dictator.

Gale J:
We’re to appoint a benevolent leader, not a prophet. We have one of those. We need to have someone to look at the whole and direct us toward it. We floundered for many years before we went to Kirk and asked him. He is benevolent & clear about where we’re going.

Short on time … moving on…

Gale J:
#7 – Forest service has come in and Gale J has had many discussions with them. We know we don’t have legal access out the end of the ranch by Kirk’s place, but we are not going to weld the pipe fence as they wanted us to. They are putting a new fence on the south and east. They are putting fence along our pipe fence. I told them that we’re not welding it because if they catch our forests on fire again, we want to be able to cut the fence and get out of there.

Logan:
Are we going to plant seed this year?

Gale J:
No – it needs disking & irrigation.

Logan:
Regarding the Reunion – should we move it up one week to the 1st full weekend in August?

MOTION: Gale J
Keep the reunion the second week in 2004 and change it to the first week of August in 2005.

SECOND: Logan

VOTE: (All in favor)

Logan:
Should we split up the responsibilities of the reunion? Mary Sue and Melanie had their hands full last year.

Activity
Major Meal
Sunday Program
Saturday Night Program

MOTION:
Split up the responsibilities of the Reunion & to be assigned by the Presidency. The Presidency is to make up a Schedule for the next few years. This is to be effective in 2004.

1) Worship Meeting – Presided by Patriarch & organized by Presidency
2) Family History Workshop – Directed by the Family History / Temple Work Committee
3) Major Meal – Assigned to a family by the Presidency
4) Saturday Day Activities – Assigned to a family by the Presidency
5) Saturday Night Activities – Assigned to a family by the Presidency

SECOND: Burdal

VOTE: (All in favor)

Gale J:
We need to set a higher standard for the talent show. We need to prepare in advance. We have SO many talented family members and we should be able to enjoy those talents.

Logan:
We need to teach & cultivate love for Logan & Mary as well as for our Ranch forbearers and our Country’s Founding Fathers

Johnnie:
It’s hard to have everybody participate in the talent show because it takes a long time. We need to have something specific for our teenagers, a workshop for teenagers. We need to be SURE to take care of the older teenage kids.

Logan: Please e-mail me @ lstapley@truepointe.com w/ ideas on how to improve

Debbie: Is there a list of who has what talents? Will family representatives please make a list?

Johnnie: We should sent out a questionnaire and each family member should list of some of the talents & interests for each family.

Logan: Need to be specific on the Saturday night activities. Teenagers

Kris: We need to expand the definition of talents. Have someone formulate a definition or a list of possibilities of what could be done. We always feel constrained to dance, play, sing but there are other things that could be done. I can’t sing or dance but I could do a good chemistry demonstration.

Logan: Read Uncle Grant’s letter … the road in front of Grant’s place is: 1) unnecessary
2) not in the plan
MOTION: Gale J
We’re supposed to have a road around the back of Tidwell’s place, in back of Brad’s new house instead of in front of Grant’s place.

Burdal: My idea of where to put that roadway, we’re putting in a looped water & sprinkler line. It should be in the middle of the road. On the north side of Grant’s.

Gale J: Draw it on the board

MOTION:
Abandon the roadway along the fence in front of Grant’s place. Move the back fence as far north as reasonably possible without infringing on the farm land. The Presidency Appointed "Ranch Committee" will study where to put the fence along the north side of Grant’s place.

SECOND: Rob

VOTE: (All in favor)

Logan: Presented RoyLynn’s idea about moving up from 1st VP to President and 2nd VP to first. That way the current President would have four years of service and the knowledge could be passed on.

MOTION:
Second vice President becomes 1st and 1st becomes president. Past President

Kirk: We need to recognize that this is a big job. It’s at least a 3-year job & 4 is probably better. We’ll always have some people with experience. Okay – not always. Normal progress would say they should be pretty well able to put their fingers on the points that might give trouble before there are problems. We should have done this before.

SECOND: Rob

VOTE: (All in favor)

Logan: Maybe we should look at having this meeting at someone else’s house so we don’t keep imposing on Uncle Gale & Aunt Sherie.

Gale J:
We’d love you to come out to the ranch.
